They keep coming out with more ipods but most people already have an ipod?! So soon there isn't going to be anyone left to buy those things.
I would suggest an MP3 Player, a nintendo DS, gift cards. You can even get a netbook for less than a laptop and they are small and cute. Check out think geek, they have a bunch of quirky stuff. Hopefully, this helps.

Yes, there are robot making kits. Some need soldering skill, while others don't.
Your kid is 12 years old, he is old enough to solder on his own, IF he got the skill to do it. If he don't have the skill, then he need to learn it under supervision. If he happen to get a very minor burn on himself during the process, it's normal, just don't make it a habit.

Robo Sapien isn't very programable, it's just for some simple movements. C-3PO definetly never going to have him as an assistant again.
Aibo on the other hand, while it's quite programable, it's more expensive than a real dog.
