Statistics show that there are more than 18 million family-owned businesses in the United States today. Naperville is home to many successful family-owned enterprises such as Russell Martin Carpets and Rugs.
Through the years, Russell Martin has thrived because the founders have the drive, vision and experience to make it a success. In 1978, when Dave and Rae Martin purchased the carpet cleaning side of the business from Russell’s Cleaners, they not only started a new venture, but they were also starting their family. Sam was born in 1977 and Kate was born in 1978. Today, their children have active roles within the company.
Owners who want their businesses to survive into the next generation must start succession planning early. A succession plan for a family-owned business is designed to lead to a smooth transition for the exiting business owner and the new owner, while maintaining the long-term viability of the business. But when a founder is solely focused on the present, he or she can fail to prepare the business for the future. That’s why 65 percent of family-run businesses fail when the founder has a health emergency, retires or dies without an identified successor.
The first step towards successful succession planning is goal setting. Are you planning on keeping the business in the family or are you looking to sell the business? The Martins identified early that they wanted the business to remain in the family. If you decided to keep the business in the family, then communication and engagement of the next generation becomes critical.
The Martins took the steps necessary to make sure their business continued to thrive by including their children in the business from a young age. Both Sam and Kate recall early experiences of working at rolling out carpets for cleaning and helping with the business. Sam is now a certified master carpet cleaner, a master installer and repairman. Kate works behind the scenes handling marketing and accounting. She is also a certified carpet cleaner and a VAST Customer Service Specialist.
After the goals have been identified, the next step in the succession planning process is developing the strategy to meet both the business and family transition needs. What are the operating, financial and leadership needs of the company to ensure a successful transition and long-term viability? What are the family or shareholder issues that need to be addressed?
If succession planning starts years before retirement, business owners should work to build the successor’s job skills with education, mentoring programs or job rotations. Once a successor or successors are chosen, there should be an adequate transition period until a retirement date is set.
Additionally, the Martins found that an informal Board of Directors made up of trusted advisors – in their case their banker and long-time accountant, have provided the hand-holding and mentoring that have allowed Sam and Kate to become more comfortable in their growing responsibilities at the company.
Help the next generation understand what qualities set your business apart from the rest. Are there certain practices you follow with customers or employees? What are the integral qualities of your business reputation? Whatever your business fundamentals, put them into a business plan for your successors.
The Martins understand their goals and have a strategy in place. While Dave and Rae are not looking to exit the company in the near future – succession planning at Russell Martin Carpets and Rugs is on the right track because the Martins started early and put a plan in place. They have also passed on to their children, the high quality standards that set their company apart from the others – attention to detail, premier customer service and the trusted advisors they will need in the future.

Help answer the question about business
Could a business career be attainable with a philosophy or politics major and a business minor?I'm currently an undergrad at a liberal arts school. I'm planning on majoring in either politics or philosophy, and a minor in business. After i get my degree, would i be capable of getting hired or nonetheless get an interview with a firm or bank. Also, could a business internship help the situation?

Sorry.. You can't even spell basic words, and you want us to take you seriously?
I've borrowed from the bank many times and never gone bankrupt. Perhaps the issue isn't with the bank.. it's with you.
I have a great solo cover of this song…check it out…pls. rate and comment…
How can Haley profess to be a Christian when she takes the Lord’s name in vain and says she won’t forgive? A whore can never change? She’s forgeting Mary Magdaline from the Bible who was a whore and did change.

Wow. That was pretty sweet. I'm not too big of a mystery-detective fan, but your story kept me interested the whole time. You mentioned that grammar is unimportant; some people write crap that looks like complete crap, but your writing wasn't god-awful. Sometimes grammar is so bad it's impossible to even comprehend a sentence. In your story, I couldn't find anything that was wrong until a little deeper in it.
And maybe this was just me being stupid. The Z-guy was on video committing a murder? Yes, but it wasn't him. That was made clear by the whole watch-situation (very Sherlock-Holmsey-conclusion) and the height. But the man who knows Z only by his face can't tell Z's face from this murderer's? He was 100 percent positive that the murderer was Z. There was no doubt that that face he saw was none other than that of the detective? Maybe there was something that I missed. I'm not sure.
I do love how you explained Lotory-Dane-thingy. That was pretty smart.
Also: the part where he is the Gable Dane. Since the one guy was raving on and on about the Dane-guy, you knew that Dane was some great detective who earned a lot of respect, so when you told that Z was Dane, I figured Dane was young when he began, ah, detectiving. 14 still seems very, very young.
Maybe you could add more detail about how Z got in contact with Lotory and such. Maybe you got more. I really don't know how a 14-year-old boy could hook up with a FBI agent and work with him without being found out immediately and sent home.
Why does he tell all of these people, people who he has never met before, his life story? He's never told anybody, and then just randomly decides to tell these people. It's a little random.
How long does it take Z to figure out that all the people who were killed work in the media? Wouldn't all personal information be given to the detective and police and la? Where they lived, who they lived with, what they did as a living? This seems like a connection that would be found immediately.
Over the time of a month, more people than these, was it 8, people would have been killed, in other accidents, right? There needs to be some connection between these people that brought them into the same case, even if it's something obvious, like the killer or source of killing hasn't been found yet, or all are close-ish in location. Maybe I just didn't read as well as I should have.
Your story is very interesting. I would really like to hear more of it, and help you with anything else that you want. It's cool-e-o. You should totally e-mail me from Answers. I hope I've helped.
I really tried to check out your story from a detective-ish point of veiw: by questioning every little thing.
EDIT:
When you're talking about friends in the media, do you mean really important people, like ones you'd see on television, or someone who takes pictures for a nearby paper. If it was the local thing, and the friends weren't important, it would be difficult and far-fetched, something that would take a while to notice. But, if it was noticeable that some themselves worked in media, the friends-connection might be made quicker still. That the other people on the case didn't mention any info on the victims for Z to go off of is bad detective-work.
I think that the face-part is interesting. So, there's somebody running around with Z's face now. Somebody who most likely knows all about Z and la. Is that person coming back? Are they a major villian in this, trying to frame Z to make sure that he stays off the case? Or is he just the pawn of some greater villian who really has no clue who Z is? Someone who just knows that he'd have his face changed and be framing a stranger.
It has to be the major bad guy who does the face-change. If the top-villian is using some random person off the street, and this bad-guy knows who Z is and probably has dozen of photos of him from spying and stuff, he'd probably pick someone the same height to do the job. If it WAS the main-bad-guy who did it, then he can't help if he's a little short.
I'm not sure I understood why the 8 murdered people were put together. I'll have to look at it again.
And, guess YOUR age? Hmmmm, I'd day that you're in your teens, like 15-17. I thought your writing was interesting so I looked at other things you posted. Tell me if I'm right! Or wrong. I'm 16 myself.
I'd like to hear more of this story! PLEASE! I've never asked anybody to email more of something, and I'm begging you.
We could get into a pretty sophisticated-ish conversation, I believe.
AHA! I found the height question (missed it before). Fifteen! There's some good detective work of myself.
this is an awesome song i luv it haha lol
